The Facial Hair Forecast: Trends for 2023

Cheers to 2023! As the new year starts to pick up pace, we thought it the perfect opportunity to forecast some upcoming trends for 2023- facial-hair-wise that is. From hipster beards to goatees, styles come and go, but we have a sneaking suspicion that this year we’ll see a lot more relaxed, lower maintenance looks.

But hey, don’t just take our word for it! We spoke with MÜHLE London’s Head Barber, Oran, as he made the following predictions for 2023:

“We will be keeping it lowkey and casual. I think the two styles most of us will be sporting are with stubble; either clean lines on the cheeks and neck or having it more natural and tapered out, possibly with a beard-stache. The length of the stubble will be no longer than a number 2 guard and the moustache will be personal preference but I have a feeling most will be leaning towards the chevron and the horseshoe.”

So, without further ado, read on to find out exactly how to create and maintain these styles as well as who’s most famously rocked the look!

The Chevron

What is it?

Shorter than the horseshoe or walrus style moustache, the Chevron is full and thick with the general direction of growth angled slightly downwards towards the corners of your mouth.

How do I create and maintain this look?

Trimming just a little bit from your moustache at a time, keep the fullness concentrated in the centre of your upper lip. Keeping everything symmetrical, create an angled, Chevron-like design at the outer edges. To achieve those clean lines and defined edges, Oran recommends using a MÜHLE double edge razor, as well as a pre-shave oil and a transparent shave gel of your choice. Finally, don’t forget to finish with a nourishing aftershave balm to soothe the skin post-shave.

Maintenance of the Chevron is fairly minimal, but we recommend trimming your moustache every few days to help keep the shape and style (depending on how fast your hair grows!). Perfect for taming any stray hair, the MÜHLE beard scissors are a must for quick and easy maintenance.

The Horseshoe

What is it?

Also known as the biker moustache, the Horseshoe is a full moustache with vertical extensions down the sides of the mouth to the jawline, resembling an upside-down U or a horseshoe.

How do I create and maintain this look?

If growing from scratch, this style may look a little unkempt at first but don’t be put off! Once you’ve got enough facial hair on your upper lip and areas joining your cheeks and chin, you’re ready to begin styling. Whilst the fine details are up to you, in general, the Horseshoe moustache involves shaving any hair from the chin and trimming the areas on your cheek/ sides of your mouth into columns. These can vary in thickness and length but usually stop with the jawline.

For optimal effect, keep the ‘tache trimmed and lines maintained. To help maintain this look, we recommend using the MÜHLE Beard Wax to help style and manage any unruly hairs. Use in combination with a few drops of the MÜHLE Beard Oil to add sheen and help nourish the hair- promoting fast and thick growth!

The Beard-Stache

What is it?

Also known as the beginner’s moustache, this style features heavy stubble and a thick moustache. Halfway between a beard and a full-blown moustache, this is a great low-maintenance style!

How do I create and maintain this look?

Start by growing out your entire beard and, when you have enough length, gradually trim all areas slightly shorter while leaving the upper lip area alone. The greater the difference between your upper lip and the rest of your hair, the more prominent your moustache will be – make sure to play and experiment with lengths!

Apart from a good trimmer and a pair of trusty beard scissors, we’d also recommend the MÜHLE Stubble Balm to help maintain this look. An easy-going companion in your daily grooming ritual, the Balm absorbs quickly into the skin leaving the face hydrated and stubble soft - stubble itch begone!
